Sandhills PRIDE, a Pinehurst organization fostering understanding and advocacy of LGBTQ+ issues in the community, will host its third annual scholarship banquet Saturday, May 5th. This year’s event will be held at Famous Toastery in Southern Pines, 1337 W. Morganton Road. The organization will award four $2,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in a region that includes Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Richmond, and Scotland counties.
The organization this year received applications from 16 students, and a review committee will select four individuals. To be eligible, students had to be a resident of one of the counties above, be entering college in the fall and identify as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or gender queer student, or as a straight ally who has demonstrated advocacy for equality and support of the LGBTQ
community. Applicants also had to submit an essay outlining his/her efforts to unite, celebrate, support, and serve LGBTQ people and allies; and discuss either his/her life as an LGBTQ student, or if a straight ally, involvement with and support of the LGBTQ community. Sandhills PRIDE funds the scholarship through direct gifts and fundraising events, including a yearly, matching fundraising goal. This year’s recipients include Martina Litty, Jimmy Cooley, Conner Jenkins, and Brooke Sikora.”
