“The Sandhills Pride Scholarship Committee recognized its three scholarship winners at awards dinners this summer for their advocacy and support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. This year’s scholarship recipients are Tyler Garner and Gitana Havner, both graduates of North Moore High School, and Cameron Locklear, who graduated from Scotland Early College. Garner will be attending Catawba College, and Havner and Locklear will be studying at UNC-Greensboro. Each scholarship winner received $2,500 toward college expenses.
Sandhills Pride, founded in 2013, is a support network and educational advocacy group dedicated to increasing awareness and acceptance of the LGBT community in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. This is Sandhills Pride Scholarship’s inaugural year. With the generosity of an anonymous $5,000 matching grant, the organization will be offering similar scholarships annually to honor young people who demonstrate advocacy for the LGBT community. “We are so proud of these young people—who they are, and the work that they’ve done,” says a scholarship committee representative. “How lucky we are to have Gitana, Tyler, Cameron, and all of the fine young people who applied for the Sandhills Pride Scholarship working to create change in the world.”
